31-Day Blog Challenge: Self-Care
Day #6 of my Blog Challenge is all about stimulating your five senses and taking time to rejuvenate yourself.
Yesterday I finished up a 3-weekend run of the play, Arsenic & Old Lace. If you've never heard of it, look it up or rent the film. It's a hoot and a half! Two sweet, altruistic, little old ladies who poison old men and bury them in their cellar? Hilarious! The past two months were spent rehearsing, set-building, and finally - performing. Now, it's the beginning of a new week and I'm feeling the strong need to decompress. I'm going to share my favorite ways to do so with activities that stimulate all my senses and leave me feeling refreshed. Some of these things can be done simultaneously, so carve out an evening to hit the restart button on your mind and body!
One of the ways I like to stimulate this sense, while turning off my busy brain, is to put on a favorite TV show. Something with a simple story line, possibly one I've seen before. Dukes of Hazzard and recently, Forensic Files have been my go-to shows. We also have this neat light lamp that rotates and projects different colors on the walls. It sounds a little "far-out," but I really enjoy just laying down and watching the lights dance. It clears the mind and helps me fall asleep.
By now, I'm sure most people have heard of rainymood.com. I've used it for years as background noise to help me focus while working on a project or trying to fall asleep. I'll also open up Pandora or iTunes and play some light instrumental music over the top of the rain sound. Sooo soothing!
With the popularity of essential oils over the past few years, there are so many options to choose from when looking for some
aromatherapy. My favorite way to invigorate my olfactories is by using bath bombs and candles. There are DIY options for making your own bath bombs, but I've enjoyed Pearl Bath Bombs since they have the added bonus of discovering a ring in the center of each bomb!
If I'm having a night alone, a hot bath followed by a pressurized shower is how I relax my aching muscles. You can find the
recipe for my favorite detox bath here. Before my bath, I apply an anti-stress mask and after I like to give myself a little foot massage with cooling lotion and wrap them with some cozy socks. If my boyfriend is home, I politely ask him to give me a massage. He's perfect because he will happily give one, but he does not care to be massaged himself. Jackpot!
This sense is unique to each person, so find what works for you! I like to kick back with a glass of wine or maybe even a Dr. Pepper - which I reserve only for the most special of occasions when I'm really rewarding myself. When I'm having a de-stress day, I typically crave cool, refreshing snacks like smoothies, ice cream, or apples and peanut butter.
I hope this inspires you to make some time to treat yourself! How do you decompress? Let me know in the comments below!
